What do Scouts do?
Scouts is where young people make new friends, have amazing adventures, and learn new skills.

Scouts are do-ers and give-it-a-go-ers. Yes, we go camping, hiking and more.
But, we also get to hang out with our friends every week – having fun, playing games, working in a team and taking on new challenges.
Every week we give all our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts the skills they need for school, college, university, the job interview, the important speech, the tricky challenge and the big dreams: the skills they need for life.
Everyone’s welcome here. All genders, races and backgrounds. Regardless of your young person’s physical ability – there’s a Scout adventure out there waiting for them. And we’ll help them find it.
Keeping children and young people safe
What we do and who we work with to ensure the safety and safeguarding of children and young people at Scouts.
Keeping children and young people safe is our number one priority. Here are some of the ways we do this:
- Volunteers have a criminal records check as part of safer recruitment.
- Volunteers must undertake written risk assessments for all activities within Scouts.
- Adult members take mandatory safety and safeguarding learning every three years.
- All adults must follow our Safeguarding Code of Conduct (Yellow Card) and Safeguarding Policy.
- All safeguarding concerns are reported to our UK HQ Safeguarding Team, who are trained to manage concerns and work with the police and other authorities.
How to report a safeguarding concern
All safeguarding concerns must be reported to the UK HQ Safeguarding Team as soon as possible and always within 24 hours. To make a report, you can:
- use our Online Safeguarding Reporting Form
- speak to one of our Safeguarding Team on 0208 433 7164.
- email safeguarding@scouts.org.uk.
- use the downloadable safeguarding reporting form.
You can also report anonymously using:
- our Whistleblowing Policy with this online form.
- the NSPCC Whistleblowing Advice Line.
Safety at Scouts
We continuously assess our policies to keep Scouts as safe as possible. This includes implementing changes based on reviews of our risk assessment process.
Safeguarding Code of Conduct for Adults
As Scouts, we’ve a clear code of behaviour we expect everyone to abide by, known as the ‘Yellow Card’. This code is shared with all adults who interact with young people, regardless of their role, and it’s included in the learning volunteers receive.
Reporting non-recent abuse
We appreciate the bravery it takes to consider speaking out about your experience. If you were abused while you were under 18 and in Scouts, we want to know and we want to offer support.

All about badges
Our badges and awards are part of what makes us Scouts – and Scouts love earning them!
Whether you’re an animal lover or an avid reader, an inspired photographer or a budding chef, you name it, we’ve got a badge for it – over 200 of them, actually.
Scouts work together on badges at their weekly meetings, away at camps, on events or they can do them at home. There’s never any pressure to do badges, so Scouts can do as many or as few as they like. Badges are easy to earn and, for lots of them, you don’t need anyone special to sign them off.
For those up for a challenge, there are loads of exciting badges to aim for and our easy to follow overview shows the range of badges and awards available, along with a simplified visual of their uniform placement.

Scout uniform
Wearing a uniform is comfy and practical. It means no one feels uncomfortable or left out and helps everyone feel part of the group.

Our uniform consists of a sweatshirt or shirt/blouse, which you can sew some of your badges onto, and a coloured scarf or ‘necker’ to represent your local group. There are lots of other optional uniform and accessories you can wear, such as hats, hoodies, trousers or shorts.
You can buy Scout uniforms either from our online Scout Store or from a local supplier. If you’re not sure where to start, your group’s volunteers should be able to give you more information about what to buy and where to buy it. They may even know if someone is selling a uniform second hand. There may be grants or pre-loved uniform donations available locally to help you buy a uniform too, so ask your group for more details.
Online Scout Manager (OSM)
Keep up to date with our online portal to important information and updates.
OSM Scout Manager is an online tool designed to help manage and organise Scouting groups, including Beavers, Cubs, and Scouts.
For parents, it provides a simple way to stay informed about your child’s activities, events, and progress within the group.
Parents can use OSM to sign up for events, keep information up to date, track badges, make payments and receive important updates from leaders, making it easier to stay involved and connected with your child’s Scouting journey.
